Are My Running Shoes Slowing Me Down?

Are My Running Shoes Slowing Me Down?

Certain running shoes will slow you down, especially heavy running shoes. The more the shoe weighs, the more energy is needed by the leg to lift and swing the foot at each step. The other concern is these running shoes typically cause you to heel strike, which causes the brake load to persist longer in duration, insufficient elastic energy loading and greater muscle costs. Essentially, these shoes reduce the body’s natural sources of elastic power, resulting in extra muscle energy, while generating excessive impact, thereby making running exponentially harder, economically and physically. "I believe the forefoot strike is the engine of endurance running..."

BSc Neurobiology; MSc Biomechanics candidate, ultra minimalist runner & founder of RunForefoot. I was a heel striker, always injured. I was inspired by the great Tirunesh Dibaba to try forefoot running. Now, I'm injury free. This is why I launched Run Forefoot, to advocate the health & performance benefits of forefoot running and to raise awareness on the dangers of heel striking, because the world needs to know.
