Why Are Cushioned Running Shoes So Bad?

Early and recent work have shown thick cushioned running shoes are proving to be less effective at preventing injury because the thicker the underfoot cushioning, the harder the foot lands on the ground, creating exponential impact that the body cannot absorb. Even worse, thick, soft compressible underfoot cushioning was found to cause lopsided movements at the foot/ankle complex, resulting in over-pronation (i.e. too much bending and twisting strain from the foot transfers up the leg). This is why it’s more immediately apparent that cushioned running shoes are more pain and injury-predisposing than not as compared with running in minimalist shoes, or even running barefoot!
