Is it Better for You to Run Barefoot?

It’s better for you to run barefoot because it improves key motor nerves and reflexes involved in organizing more balanced, functional and safe mechanics. It also plays a critical role in maintaining the body’s natural mechanical and reflexive defences against high impacts. Evidently, research shows that running barefoot optimizes the proprioceptive system more fully as compared with running in thickly cushioned running shoes. This is because when barefoot, the multiple sensory inputs converging on the underfoot stimulates the proprioceptor nerves that line the bottom of the foot which link up to and activate one of the body’s vital mechanical defences known as the avoidance behaviour reflex.
