If you want to immediately improve your running form, spending more time running barefoot can really help you out because it improves the body’s proprioceptive sense (the awareness of our joints in space and the forces acting on them). It turns out that when you run barefoot, especially on harder surfaces, the multiple sensory inputs converging on the underfoot directly stimulates the proprioceptive nerves lining the bottom of the foot which link up to and activate one of the body’s most vital mechanical defenses known as the avoidance behavior reflex.
