Is There a Benefit to Running Barefoot?

One of the fastest, surest ways to improve your running form is to spend more time running barefoot because it was found to improve the body’s proprioceptive sense (the awareness of our joints in space and the forces acting on them). Evidently, when you run barefoot, there’s multiple sensory inputs converging on the underfoot which directly stimulate the proprioceptive nerves lining the bottom of the foot. These nerves link up to and activate one of the body’s most vital mechanical defences, known as the avoidance behaviour reflex. In this capacity, the body is more capable of delivering stronger protections against high impacts by reflexively assembling more functional, balanced, low-impact biomechanics.
