What Causes Heel Striking When Running

A popular explanation for what causes heel striking when running is the thick under-heel cushioning of a running shoe. The higher the heel relative to the toe-box (i.e. a large heel-to-toe offset) of a running shoe, causes the front of the foot to lift up upon and at touchdown which in turn facilitates a heel strike more easily as compared with a minimalist running shoe or running barefoot.
