What Causes Heel Striking When Running?

Running shoes with an elevated cushioned heel tends to cause heel striking when running because it causes the foot to over-reach in front of the hips at landing while encouraging the front of the foot to lift back. This is how the foot ends up landing heel-first as compared with minimalist running shoes or running barefoot which often discourages heel strike and instead facilitates a forefoot strike more easily.
