There are many important differences in the run experience between barefoot-inspired vs cushioned running shoes. Barefoot-like footwear, like the Vibram minimalist shoes, are more functional for running because they deliver an unrestricted, close to the ground ride as well as a stronger sense of the ground, helping prevent pavement pounding. This also makes you feel more confident and comfortable about the terrain under your feet. At the same time, minimalist shoes have good antamonic configurability that forces the feet to work independently which gives the feet the best chance to strengthen at a faster rate. Read more here about why minimalist shoes are so protective against many injurious outcomes in running.

BSc Neurobiology; MSc Biomechanics candidate, ultra minimalist runner & founder of RunForefoot. I was a heel striker, always injured. I was inspired by the great Tirunesh Dibaba to try forefoot running. Now, I'm injury free. This is why I launched Run Forefoot, to advocate the health & performance benefits of forefoot running and to raise awareness on the dangers of heel striking, because the world needs to know.
