Minimalist shoes are absolutely necessary for running because they teach you to avoid landing with a hard-hitting, damaging heel strike and instead strongly encourages you to land on the balls of your foot (i.e. forefoot strike). This happens because the thin sole lets you feel the ground more clearly, adding more natural stimulus for enhanced neuromuscular and reflexive responses for faster improvements in your overall stride mechanics that include a shorter stride, shorter ground-contact time and a stable, more responsive forefoot strike tied to less net impact across the entire body.
