Does Forefoot Running Prevent Injury?

Does Forefoot Running Prevent Injury?

In forefoot running, the calves are more engaged as shock absorbers because landing with a forefoot strike during running helps organize key mechanical parameters (i.e increased ankle plantarflexion and knee flexion) that prevents the calf from overstretching at touchdown. As a result, less impact is dispersed up the leg and overloads to the calf muscle can be avoided. Read more here on how heel strike running has the opposite effect which makes the calves more vulnerable to injury as compared with forefoot running.

"I believe the forefoot strike is the engine of endurance running..."

BSc Neurobiology; MSc Biomechanics candidate, ultra minimalist runner & founder of RunForefoot. I was a heel striker, always injured. I was inspired by the great Tirunesh Dibaba to try forefoot running. Now, I'm injury free. This is why I launched Run Forefoot, to advocate the health & performance benefits of forefoot running and to raise awareness on the dangers of heel striking, because the world needs to know.
