What Kind of Shoes Should Seniors Wear?

Emerging research shows thick cushioned shoes with more padding under the heel than the front of the shoe was found to be a big contributor to tripping and falls in seniors. This is because the thick, compressive underfoot materials coupled with a significantly large heel-to-toe offset was found to prevent seniors from properly detecting changes in body positions, thereby impairing compensatory behaviours to prevent falls, while further increasing the risk of tripping due to inadequate ‘toe-clearance’, causing the shoe to catch obstacles as compared with minimalist shoes.
