The protective benefits of running in cushioned running shoes is very questionable. Reports in the American Journal of Sports Medicine discovered that heavily cushioned running shoes with stability features did nothing to reduce damaging impact acceleration and shock on the shin in runners who landed with a heel strike. Similar results in a 2019 study in the Journal of Physics revealed that adding insoles to these shoes failed to reduce the high burst in collisional impact at heel strike during running, but rather significantly increased net impact as compared with minimalist running shoes and running barefoot!
