Do Cushioned Running Shoes Prevent Injury?

Cushioned running shoes do not prevent injury. Running in heeled running shoes increases heel striking and overstriding, which means the foot lands in front of the ankle, knee and hips. In this way, there are more damaging forces acting on the body than if the foot were to land under the ankle, knee and closer to the hips, which is usually the case when landing with a forefoot strike, especially in minimalist running shoes or running barefoot. "I believe the forefoot strike is the engine of endurance running..."

BSc Neurobiology; MSc Biomechanics candidate, ultra minimalist runner & founder of RunForefoot. I was a heel striker, always injured. I was inspired by the great Tirunesh Dibaba to try forefoot running. Now, I'm injury free. This is why I launched Run Forefoot, to advocate the health & performance benefits of forefoot running and to raise awareness on the dangers of heel striking, because the world needs to know.
